You’re a broken mirror, you’re the shards on my floor I saw my scattered reflection, I thought “Oh man, I’m done for” But then I placed the pieces into a funny shape And I made a Picasso out of my face You’re a crack in the sidewalk on which I walked hypnotized If I stepped upon you, my mom would be paralyzed Now when I go out walking, I know that she’s safe And that construction workers will fill you in someday You’re a thirty-foot ladder, I walked right underneath I cursed my misfortune before I went to sleep But then in my dreams, I climbed all your rungs And when I awoke I was looking down on what was You’re Friday the 13th, oh I was so scared I stayed in all day and hid under the stairs But now it’s February and I’ll take them two at a time Because tomorrow I will meet my new valentine You’re a black cat that crossed my path I thought you would haunt me, thought you would have the last laugh So I gave you some milk and left you to scratch at my door Because I don’t want to believe in you no more

Mari and Arthur, trudging slowly through the snow The first of the winter but it can’t keep them in their home He likes the adventure, she likes his picture on her phone The fashionable boots made by snow stuck to his fur Mari and Arthur Content with each other Mari and Arthur Mari and Arthur As they turn the corner, they see one of her old friends Who asks about Arthur and about Mari’s new boyfriend “When did you get him? And is he really American?” “Back in October. And yeah, he’s the nicest one I’ve had yet!” Mari and Arthur Content with each other Mari and Arthur Mari and Arthur And he’ll be there for her through sick days and mistakes And when her boy goes home, he’ll lick up all of her heartache And she’ll be holding him when the stars fall like snowflakes over his eyes His tiny eyes search for hidden treasures beneath the white While her pretty brown eyes comb the streets and the powdered sky I’d like to frame them, I’d like to have them all my life So I put my guitar down and I take their picture from behind
